In February 2022, employers hired workers for 336,600 Canadian jobs and the national unemployment rate dropped to only 5.5 percent, according to StatisticsCanada (StatCan). The national unemployment rate is now the lowest since before the start of the global pandemic in February 2020 when it was 5.7 percent. It is also close to Canada’s lowest unemployment rate on record which was 5.4% back in May 2019. According to StatCan, a record 84.6% of women 25-54 years of age are working in Canada, while 88.2% of men 25-54 years of age had Canadian jobs (the most since November 1981). People working in Canada also earned 3.1% more money during February 2022 than they did 12 months earlier. There is now full employment in Canada and employers are offering higher wages and more benefits in order to recruit new workers to fill an estimated 900,000 Canadian job vacancies.
